Rizal Technological University’s Capabilities in Additive Manufacturing Gets Boost through Partnership with DOST

By: Ella Vanesa L. Lopez

The Rizal Technological University (RTU) sent 10 handpicked faculty members and researchers to the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen) to undergo a two-week training program in the field of additive manufacturing with the aim to build an innovative army of researchers.

This training program was born out of joint efforts among the Department of Science and Technology-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC), the DOST-National Capital Region (DOST-NCR), and Rizal Technological University (RTU). This initiative will directly benefit RTU in its plans to establish its own 3D printing facility inside the university to serve its internal requirements as well as those of the industry.

Engr. Robert O. Dizon, DOST-MIRDC’s Executive Director, welcomed the guests to the facility. He expressed his delight that his presentation of the Center’s facilities and services six months ago during an event at RTU, led to this training program.

During the opening program, Professor Ryan Manuel D. Guido, RTU’s Director for R&D Center, was hopeful that this training program will pave the way to address the problems of the academe in terms of their 3D printing requirements. He said “…maraming STEM students sa Mandaluyong and Rizal area ang hindi alam kung saan magpapa-3D print, ngayon, baka pwedeng sa RTU na.”

Engr. Oscar B. Sevilla Jr., Sr. SRS of the DOST-NCR, reiterated that the proposed establishment of a 3D printing facility in RTU will complement the other established facilities and will consider in its offerings the requirements of the industry. He said “…after macapacitate ng ating mga researchers, makakapagbibigay din po ng serbisyo ang RTU both inside and outside.” This is great news to those who are looking for ways to utilize additive manufacturing as part of their academic curriculum or of local manufacturers’ production process.

A facility tour followed immediately after the opening program. The training course will run from February 20 to March 3, 2023, and include lectures and use of the different 3D printing technologies currently available in AMCen. The DOST-MIRDC is committed to assisting those who would like to avail of training programs from the experts of the Center.
