Abulencia from MIRDC’s Prototyping Division had a strong presence in the 7th International Conference on Humanoid, Nanotechnology, Information Technology, Communication and Control, Environment and Management (HNICEM 2014) joint with 6th International Conference on Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics (ISCIII) and co-located with 10th Engineering Research and Development Technology (ERTD) Conference as their paper entitled “Design Optimization of a PLC-Based Controlled Microwave Vacuum Dryer for Stabilization of Fine-Grade Rice Bran (Oryza Sativa)” was selected for the Best Poster Paper Award. |

The conference which featured plenary and invited talks by prominent scientists and engineers, parallel and poster paper presentations and industrial exhibits was held last November 12-16, 2014 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The said conference with the theme “Disaster Readiness through Humanitarian Technology” did not only cover the fields of engineering and computer science but also served as a platform to discuss new research development and innovations especially in promoting Information and Communications Technology and the Semiconductors and Electronics, which are two of ERTD’s research tracks. Moreover, the convention’s theme also served as a channel to promote the relevance of HNICEM/ISCIII to a broad range of engineering discipline and to bring new technologies to Filipinos particularly focusing on ways to alleviate the effects of inevitable disasters.
In addition to Engr. Rogelio and his co-authors’ entries for the said conference were three more papers for the oral paper presentation entitled “Development of an Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) System for the 3-Axis Computer Numerically-Controlled (CNC) Router Machine”, “A Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) LASER Power Controller for the 3-Axis Computer Numerically-Controlled (CNC) LASER Machine” (both co-authored by Engr. Renann G. Baldovino) and “Optimization of Machine Process Parameters through 2D Image Layout Enhancing and ArtCAM Post-Processing for 3D Machining” co-authored by Engr. Renann G. Baldovino, Engr. Geoffrey L. Abulencia and Mr. Virgilio Y. Macanip, Jr.
With their initiative to continuously contribute to the expansion of knowledge in research and development, Engr. Rogelio was happy to announce that they have successfully submitted two research papers for the upcoming IAENG International Conference on Control and Automation (ICCA) 2015, one of the conferences under the International MultiConference of Engineers and Computer Scientists 2015 organized by the International Association of Engineers (IAENG) which will take place in Hong Kong on March 18-20, 2015. The titles of their papers which were accepted for oral paper presentation are “A PC-Based Controller for the Computer Numerically-Controlled (CNC) LASER Machine” co-authored by Engr. Renann G. Baldovino and “Optimization of Microwave Vacuum Dryer Design Parameters Using CST Microwave Studio for Low-moisture Food Application” co-authored by Engr. Geoffrey L. Abulencia, Engr. Renann G. Baldovino, and Ms. Tracy Ann U. Tolentino.

The MIRDC held its annual Christmas celebration last December 18, 2014 with the theme “Funtasy #anopegmo” which rendered a fun-filled fantasy-inspired party.
Though the theme of the party was announced early, employees were still clueless about how each division have prepared for the celebration which made them even more excited. Following this year’s motif, employees from the Financial and Administrative Division (FAD) arrived in their eye-catching Harry Potter costumes; the Technology Diffusion Division (TDD) in their random Disney costumes; the Analysis and Testing Division (ATD) in their X-Men costumes; while the Materials and Process Research Division (MPRD), the Prototyping Division (PD) and the Planning and Management Division (PMD) arrived in their own peg Christmas outfits.
The program started with a doxology sung by Mr. Greg Anthony Alonzo, Planning Officer III, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and MIRDC Hymn. Dr. Agustin M. Fudolig, Deputy Executive Director for Technical Services and Asec. Roberto O. Dizon, Officer- in-Charge of the MIRDC, welcomed the employees with their Opening Remarks and Inspirational Message, respectively. An intermission dance number fueled the enthusiasm of employees as the MIRDC top officials participated in the dance number without hesitation.

The Christmas party’s success was largely due to the array of performances provided by employees from different divisions. FAD, MPRD, PMD and ATD personnel showcased their talents in dancing while TDD and PD staff surprised everyone with a song and dance number. Adding more fun to the event is the song number of Project Management Engineering and Design Service Office (PMEDSO) personnel. Another highlight that made the celebration more significant is the award and recognition given to deserving MIRDC employees.

In between exciting presentations from different divisions were the thrilling games facilitated by Ms. Marilyn Diaz of PD and the much awaited raffle wherein cash prizes, prepaid cards and appliances were given away to lucky employees. Among the grand prize winners were Mr. Alberto Olivo from FAD and Ms.Tracy Ann Tolentino from PD who both received a 32” flat screen TV. Before announcing the winner of the best group performance, new members of the MIRDC family were called in front and introduced by Ms. Jelly N. Ortiz, Chief, Administrative and General Services Section. The Prototyping Division staff won the award for best group performance while additional awards were given to FAD as best in costume by group and ATD for best costume by pair.

At the latter part of the program, Ms. Lina B. Afable, Chief of the Technology Information and Promotion Section (TIPS) announced the distribution of 2015 MIRDC calendars funded by MakiBayan partner-associations. The program which was hosted by Engr. Jojit Velasco and Ms. Liezl Santos was then capped off by the Closing Remarks of Engr. Jonathan Q. Puerto, Deputy Executive Director for Research and Development.

The Aerospace Industries Association of the Philippines (AIAP) together with the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) of the Department of Science and Technology, hosted the "Aerospace Forum" on July 31, 2015 at the MIRDC Silver Auditorium from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The purpose of which is to inspire and challenge the various companies to go into and partner with the aerospace industry. Mr. John T. Lee, President of the AIAP, assures prospective investors of a successful venture if they entrust resources in this endeavor. "Investing in this business is essentially going into a high-risk, high returns playing field. By highly specialized, we mean that the aerospace business is not just for anybody. You need to have the required accreditations, the skills, the capacity. You have to be one of the best," according to Dr. Amelia P. Guevara, DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development.
Resource speakers from multinational aerospace companies like MOOG Controls, Phils. Inc., Jamco Phils., B/E and Surface Technology International discussed prospects and potential markets to entice investors in the local aerospace industries. Representing the government were resource speakers from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), Development Bank of the Philippines, Board of Investments and MIRDC. PEZA Director General Lilia B. de Lima elaborated on why the companies should invest here in the Philippines through the various economic zones and science parks that are available to house their companies' facilities. DOST Assistant Sec. Robert O. Dizon presented the MIRDC's capabilities and state-of-the-art facilities whose services are tailored to potential aerospace ventures. Finally, Mr. Dennis Y. Chan, Vice-President of the AIAP, poured out words of encouragement by disclosing that his company and that of Mr. Lee's were some sort of guinea pigs when they ventured in the aerospace industry. Their companies' stature now proves that indeed this has been an excellent investment. According to him, companies willing to invest shall undergo development skills such as training to both ISO 9001 and AS 9100, the Quality Management System Certification and Aerospace Quality Standards Certification. The MIRDC has already hosted a training in AS 9100 with orientation in ISO 9001 in 2013. The forum participants were selected AIAP members and MIRDC employees. Last year, the DOST showcased the aerospace industries in the National Science and Technology Week, which gathered a huge audience and helped increase awareness of the public, industry and academe.

The Department of Science and Technology, through the MEtals Industry Researc and Development Center, Implemented a project entitled, "Improvement of Flood Control Facility through the Development of Automatic Trash rake (ATR)." This iniative is DOST's active response to President Benigno. S. Aquino's pronouncement tat the DOST's is a possible provider of alternative technology to solve the flooding problems in the country.

After it's successful completion, the ATR was launched on Dec. 2, 1014 through the coordination of the MIRDC's Technology
Information and Promotion Section (TIPS). Engr. Robert O. Dizon, Assistant Secretary of the DOST and Officer in charge of
MIRDC stated in his opening remarks that the DOST-MIRDC is here as a part of the solution. According to the ATR Project
Leader Engr. Gharry M. Bathan, the rate of collection of wastes by the automatic trash rake is 3.8 cu.m. per 8 hour-shift
which is best achieved during rainy seasons. DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo and Quezon City Mayor Herbert M. Bautista
delivered partnership statements and expressed cooperation for the further success of the project. “Hopefully this
mechanized trash collector will minimize the clogging of rivers, canals and esteros” Sec. Montejo said in his message. DOST-
MIRDC’s Deputy Executive Director for Research and Development Engr. Jonathan Q. Puerto gave the closing remarks and
expressed thanks to the Quezon City LGU for hosting the launching of the activity. Finally, the project team gave a
demonstration of the ATR at the project site located at Balingasa Creek along Gregorio Araneta Ave. corner Mauban St.,
Quezon City.

The Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) have aligned special events today, December 15, 2015 that will highlight the public-private partnership of the metals and allied engineering industries and the Department of Science and Technology especially MIRDC. The events are the "FGD on the Competitiveness Roadmap of the Tool and Die Industry of the Philippines" and the "PARTNERSHAPE Conference 2015."
The focus group discussion is conducted at 9:00 in the morning (at the MIRDC Platinum Auditorium) while the "PARTNERSHAPE" is held at 2:00 in the afternoon (also at the same venue). The former event is intended to review the roadmap taking into consideration developments and recent events that impact on the supply chain and over-all business environment in order to integrate strategies to support the attainment of identified goals and objectives of the said roadmap.
The latter event aims to gather together the Officers of DOST partners-associations in the Makinarya at Teknolohiya para sa Bayan (MakiBayan) Program and take advantage of the opportunity for the key decision-makers of various industry associations to view the presentations of the major MIRDC projects in 2016, overview of the planned activities for the Golden Founding Anniversary of MIRDC including exploratory discussion on the formation of a new M & E Industries foundation and status of the CNC Training Program. Fellowship follows after the Conference proper and is going to be a Christmas party time with our industry friends from 5pm onwards. Surprise musical numbers is certainly being enjoyed by the M & E guests and MIRDC/other government participants.
